    Use of competitive crops to reduce Cirsium arvense

    Cirsium arvense is difficult to control and mechanical control may result in yield loss or nutrient leaching. Growing a competitive crop such as grass clover has earlier been seen to reduce the infestation. This paper describes a test of different competitive crops (oilseed rape and fibre hemp) comparing the infestation with that occurring with one or two years of grass clover. Oilseed rape did not grow well and was not very competitive, while C. arvense infestation was reduced the year after growing fibre hemp or grass-clover

    Organic Eprints is an open, on-line archive for research in organic food and farming with more than 10,000 publications - and growing rapidly. There are 15,000 registered users of Organic Eprints. All use of the archive is free of charge. The archive contains scientific and popular articles, reports, presentations, project descriptions, books and other research publications. For each publication there is a short summary along with bibliographic and other information. In most cases, the full articles are freely available for download. The workshop aims to make the participants aquainted with Organic Eprints, so that they in the future can use the system for searching for research publications and other information about research in Organic agriculture and for depositing their own work. The participants will be guided through registering and searching and shown how to deposit papers

    Computer model for simulating the long-term dynamics of annual weeds under different cultivation practices

    A model is being developed which describes the population dynamics of annual weeds and how it is affected by crop rotation, cultivation practices and weed control. The model aims to predict the development of a certain weed species in order to plan crop rotation and cultivation practices to minimize the risk of proliferation. The model does not predict the exact number of weeds expected to be found in a certain year or crop, but rather the general development over a number of years. The model includes documented knowledge, as well as informal expert knowledge, on seed survival in the soil, seed placement in soil after tillage, seed germination with respect to placement in soil, time of year and tillage, weed development in response to crop competitiveness and seed production of the weeds. The model is at present only accounting for the development of one weed species at a time, and only a few weed species are parameterised. However, the model can easily be extended with more weed species, crops and cultivation practices. Model predictions should match what knowledgeable weed scientists already know, perhaps with a little new insight

    Management of perennial weeds and nitrogen leaching in arable cropping systems

    A crop rotation experiment was established in 1997 at three locations representing different soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: crop rotation, catch crop and manure. Catch crop reduced nitrate leaching, but prohibited stubble cultivation. The use of catch crops resulted in increased levels of perennial weeds (E. repens) at one location, while at another; the level of C. arvense was not affected by catch crops, when compared with the use of stubble cultivation. Management of perennial weeds should include considerations of where in a crop rotation to use stubble cultivation, and this should preferably not be after a pulse crop. Catch crops are a more profitable way to manage C. arvense than stubble cultivations

    Organic Eprints - making research in Organic Food and Farming more visible

    Organic Eprints is an Open Access archive for research in organic food and farming. While based in Europe, it is international and open for deposits from all over the world. Since the start in 2002, the archive has steadily grown to over 10,000 deposits in 2010. Open Access enables more users to download and read the deposited papers, and this may lead to increased citations. Development of a platform based on Organic Eprints among other agriculture-related archives should make search even stronger. All researchers who work with organic food and farming are encouraged to register and deposit their work in Organic Eprints
